Public Service Announcement: Direct TV Scam Alert
The Bancroft Police Department is warning residents about a prevalent scam targeting Direct TV customers. Scammers are impersonating Direct TV representatives and attempting to defraud unsuspecting individuals.
Here's how the scam works:
- You receive a call from someone claiming to be from Direct TV.
- The caller states they need to "check your TV box" or perform a remote diagnostic.
- After the supposed check, the caller requests you send them a check for a service fee or equipment upgrade.
- They may pressure you to act quickly or threaten service disconnection.
Protect Yourself:
- Be wary of unsolicited calls: Direct TV rarely initiates calls requesting immediate payment or remote access to your equipment.
- Verify the caller's identity: If you receive a suspicious call, do not provide any personal or financial information.
- Let unrecognized numbers go to voicemail: If you don't recognize the number, let the caller leave a message. This gives you time to verify their legitimacy.
- Double-check the number: Always verify the caller's number by comparing it to the official Direct TV customer service number listed on their website. Do not rely on the number provided by the caller.
- Never send checks or provide financial information: Direct TV will not request payment via personal check for remote diagnostics.
- Report suspicious activity: If you believe you have been targeted by this scam or any others like it, please report it to the Bancroft Police Department immediately.
Remember: Scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated and may use tactics that appear legitimate. Stay vigilant and protect yourself from becoming a victim.
