Electric Service

Bancroft Municipal Electric was created in 1939 by city election. Voters approved the measure to build an electrical generating plant 425 – 14. Output from the electric plant has grown from .35 mega watts to a total generating capacity of 4.4 mega watts today. This allows BMU to supply the entire community and its rural customers with dependable electric service.

In addition to providing service to all Bancroft residents and businesses, BMU has over 68 miles of electric rural lines. In an effort to expand services and better meet area needs, in 2007, BMU entered into an agreement to sell wholesale power to the community of Burt, Iowa. This led to significant savings to Burt customers and allowed BMU to increase its access to safe and secure power.

BMU is a member of NIMECA (North Iowa Municipal Electric Cooperative Association) headquartered in Humboldt, IA.
