The Veteran's of Foreign Wars unit was organized in 1948.  It was named Rahe-Murray Post No. 7639 after Erwin Rahe and Thomas Murray.  Erwin Rahe, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Rahe, was a Technical Sergeant with a bomber group that was shot down over Italy in 1945.  He is buried in a National cemetery at Louisville, Kentucky.  Thomas Murray, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Murray, was an infantry-man on Luzon, Philippine Islands, and killed April 19, 1945 when following a tank assault.  After the war his body was returned to Bancroft.

 

Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary

The Auxiliary to Rahe-Murray Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7639 was instituted October 7, 1948.  The institution was conducted by the Department president, Gretchen Nicholas of Ottumwa, assisted by National Color Bearer, Hedwig Olson of Denison. Irene Bertsch, department Senior Vice President, acted as secretary and Julia Sloan as conductress.  The auxiliary was organized by Bessie Jacobson, President Sixth District.  Officers of the Britt auxiliary filled the chairs and executed the floor work.  There were fifty-seven charter members.  The croup won a citation for being the largest auxiliary in the state of Iowa in 1948.
